WARNING: A "Johnny Rant". The opinion expressed here, is that of Johnny, and is not necessarily that of the Broadland Greyhound & Whippet Club:
Today's news revealed a 40% increase in reported dog bites over the past year. There was a news story featured on the BBC News showing a young girl, who was recently scarred for life when a Rottweiler bit into her face, They also showed a gang of kids who had a couple of menacing looking dogs, who they were provoking (slapping the side of the dog's face), in order to make it snap at them.
My question is ............................ When will our brain-dead elite (ie - our politicians) actually DO something about this?
On one side we have yobs owning dogs to improve their "street image", or make them "look hard", whilst on the other we have both the racing industry, and the inane whims of the "consumer"; many of who acquire a dog as they would any normal High Street "product", ie - without little (if any) actual forethought as to the needs and requirements of the dog. Surely, this leads, both directly and indirectly to the unnecessary deaths of tens of thousands of unwanted dogs every year?
I started off a petition over a year ago, calling for the reintroduction of a dog licence, along with compulsory chipping. Unfortunately, our dear Prime Minister chose to do nothing.
If attacks on the public by dogs continue to rise, year on year, believe me - we WILL see the introduction of the dog licence, as our thick-headed politicians will see that it's the only way through which responsibility can be enforced.
However, isn't it such a huge shame that in the meantime, so many people have to be injured before this comes into effect, and isn't it a pity that the Government doesn't seek the opinions of the many responsible owners like ourselves.
It's also saddens me to see the reputation of our four-legged friends being diminished due to sheer ignorance all round, and to see a new generation of kids growing up, who seem to view dogs as inherently aggresive.
Surely this insanity has to stop?
