Hi, Tanya, I'm intrigued and confused. In my day - in the dark middle 1960's when I used to show dogs - lurchers were not recognised as a distinct breed. They were always simply a first cross between a pedigree greyhound and any breed of pedigree gun-dog, and they were bred that way (usually by gipsies) to produce a working dog with both field instinct and speed. However, the Worcester schedule refers to 'champion' classes. How can you have a champion show dog if it's not a pedigree? Has the Kennel Club now recognised the lurcher as a distinct breed?

lurchers are shown now all over the country wekk in week out til the season starts again in the autumn, they are classed as the champion lurcher on the day and usually this show is a qualifier for either the midland game fair or pride of the peaks both very highly sought after titles, ots a class for lurcher folk to show their dogs at a high level event and enjoy the prestige that goes with it , as for pedigree these dogs are usually better tracable then most kc reg dogs and lines go back many many years and generations and the varied mixes are quoted staright off rather then referring to the ped papers, a lircher is any sighthound crossed woth like a collie for example, or a bedlington terrier, a long dog is sighthound x with another sighthound, eg whippet x greyhound, origins go back to poachers ahnd travelling folk

Thanks for your reply, Tanya, it answers a few questions about lurchers. In 'my day' border collies and jack russells were not showable under KC rules and rottweilers had not yet been bred in England!!! OOhhh - makes me feel so ancient! But how I loved showing dogs!!! It's an addictive hobby that sort of gets you, doesn't it?
