Yesterday Kitty & I paid a visit to Keith & Lyz at the Hallswood Animal Sanctuary.
Whilst we were there we heard the most horrendous story, and met a very special little dog (below):
This female Collie is probably about 6-7 years old.
It is blind, and it's been starved and then dumped by it's former owner.
The police and local authorities couldn't take it. The RSPCA didn't want it, so - it found it's way to Hallswood.
It's difficult from the photo above to really understand what an awful state this dog is in, as the fur covers up the starved body and wasted muscles.
The thing which really moved me was the fact that this poor creature actually came over to me and sniffed and licked my hand. After all it's been through - it showed a greater dignity than the scumbag who'd owned it.
Whoever owned this dog cannot be described as a human being. They are the type of people who make you feel ashamed to be human!
Unfortunately cases like this are getting all too common, and actually increasing, as our politicians pay no attention to the suffering that goes on. Keith has done some research locally, and found that the amount of strays and abuse cases have increased 40% in the last year.
But will writing to our politicians do any good?
Probably not.
After all, there's little personal gain or no money in it for them - at least not in-between election times!
The problem with animal abuse is that's it's now reached epidemic proportions. And there's no way the problem will be solved unless we see a system in place to force people to be more responsible for their pets.
There needs to be a sensible breeding policy, dog licencing, neutering for strays, and proper punishment for anyone who deliberately causes suffering to these poor animals.
Yes, they need to start handing down prison sentences to the people that treat their pets like this. After all, what will they be abusing next - probably their children, an elderly neighbour, or something else that's not able to defend itself!
