Yes, we've found out our whippets love carrots!
We've been doing some reading up on what foods are good for dogs, and there's quite a few pet nutritionists recommending a raw, natural diet nowadays.
Now I will hasten to say - that not everything raw is necessarily good for dogs, or advisable, and this area is very controversial, with vets and nutritionist holding completely opposite viewpoints, especially when it comes to meat.
For instance - There was a case recently where a lady fed her dog on raw meat from a leading supermarket, and guess what? Yes - it killed it!
That was because of some of the dangerous things found in meats (parasites etc) are killed by cooking meat thoroughly, and it was a parasite from the meat which killed her Boxer dog.
I was reading of one breeder of whippets who incorporated fresh vegetables in with their dogs food, and again, there's certainly some stuff you should avoid.
For instance - potatoes and tomatoes are not recommended for dogs, but carrots, swedes, and cabbage (in small quantity) are very good for them. The reason they're good for them is because they're "live" food, and contain naturally enzymes - which assists in digestion and absorbtion of food. Processed dog food and tinned foods are completely absent of enzymes,
I've been mixing in some finely grated carrot and parsnip in with Star and Sugar's food, and they seem to love it.
I'll let you know how they get on.
Let's hope they don't start growing longer ears and begin hopping around!
