As we have a special honory gery - Ollie, i was wondering if anyone else had other breeds of dog aswell as gerys? Has anyone owned other breeds or have you always been mad about greyhounds? As i was growing up we had various breeds of dogs including GSD, afghan hound, pekinese, yorkshire terrier, poodle and a springer spaniel (half of these were given to us as they were unwanted.) Once i got married we got a bull terrier (this was due to a marriage break up) he was a fabulous dog and we've also had a couple of rescue staffordshire bull terriers, again they were great dogs and fantastic with the children. I use to work in a vets and have also done voluntary work at a rescue kennels so i got to meet all different breeds of dog plus crossbreeds but i never came across many greyhounds or whippets It was T who liked gerys and once we got over having to have our staffy put down he suggested having a look for a gery, and the rest is history..... ;D

When I was younger we had a really nice Collie called Sheeba she was lovely we had her from a pup, but my parents gave her to the police saying she was a stray! I only found that out a few years ago, but we had Sheeba about 15 years ago! We also had a collie cross (Mungrel) called Duke, he was the best dog EVER (maybe on a level with Sophie) He was sooooo loyal, even when he got older he was still really happy to see everyone, even my parents - even though they wouldn't let him out of the back room (because the "rats" didn't like him). He was always as good as gold, I rem.ember he used to get so excited when one of us kids came round and walked him (only walks he got) he loved it, he had plenty of energy, even for an old bean! We had him from a pup too. We had him for about 10 years or maybe more I think, then my parents decided that they preferred Those little rat dogs (chuwowa.... you kow what i mean!!) so they gave him to "a friend" without telling us or asking any of us kids if we would take him, Me and BB would have taken him (it makes me really sad typing this). We never saw him again and my mum said he died just before Christmas last year Then when me and BB got together we got an 8 year old Gery called Lottie, she was a lovely dog and it was really heart breaking when we had to give her back to the Greyhound Rescue. We were told that she would be fine in a home environment, but we were lied to. Before she was palmed off on the kennels where we found her her previous owners got her from a Greyhound resue place, where all the dogs were kept together in a massive outside barn conversion, so they had never experienced an indoor home life, she could not handle being left alone for even an hour, she would go nuts, chewying doors, carpets, furniture anything she could. We spent hundreds of pounds trying to train her, but she just wasn't going to adapt, so we took her (co-insidentally) to where she came from originally and I believe she stayed there. At least they looked after her and she could play with about 15 or more other Gery's. She looked happy but it broke mine and BB's hearts. So now we have Sophie, we will Cherish her until she is an old Grey Gery! we will never give her up, no matter what, even if she eats one of them rats of my mums! Oh and we must not forget our little cats Charlotte (BB's Favorite... shhhhh!) who we have had for about five years from the RSPCA and little Ozzy who we have had since he was 6 weeks old and is now about 3 (I think!!).

Awww Stuart why did they give Sheeba away? and Duke? do they just not like old dogs or something, thats terrible, you must have been heartbroken. My last staffy had been ill treated before we got him and he hated being on his own, he got worse as he got older too and ended up eating door frames whenever he was left, even for 20 minutes, thats not a great sight to come home too Oh and its chihuahua ;D

We have 2 greys and 2 lurchers. The greys are a piece of cake to look after compared to the lurchers. Lurchers are stuborn, awkward, attention seeking, with selective hearing and ATTITUDE! But could just be the type that we have. 1 is a saluki X whippet and the other is a Doberman X both are bitches and neither does as she is told! 2 greys are as good as gold.

Awww Stuart why did they give Sheeba away? and Duke? do they just not like old dogs or something, thats terrible, you must have been heartbroken. Oh and its chihuahua ;D It was really heartbreaking, I was quite upset last night just writing about it! I'm not sure why they gave up Sheeba, i've never confronted them about her. But with Duke, they said that he wasn't happy, he wasn't eating properly so they wanted him to go where he could be with another dog... My answer to that was, he wasn't happy because he spent all his time in there back room by himself, he never got any affection (apart from us kids) he wasn't eating properly becuase they fed him cheap dog meat and toast! It really made me mad and upset at the same time. I think thats why we mother Sophie so much! (to a point *looks towards Johnny*) ps... about chihuahua... see you knew what I meant!

When I was about four, my sister had a King Charles Spaniel called "Lucky". It was a nice little dog, but I never got attached to it. Things didn't work out, and I believe it was given to someone else? That was way back in about 1969 (Showing my age now!) : : : :

When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother what will I be.... Oops sorry (got carried away there) When I was just a little girl my mum & dad had 2 dogs called Dawn & Blaze which they'd rescued from the dog sanctuary where mum worked. Dawn was blind, they stuck together like glue bless their little hearts. When Blaze went I rem.ember Dawn being very depressed, she wouldn't even leave the house for a walk. She didn't live much longer herself. I have some lovely pics of them but dont rem.ember them too much as I was only little (or should I say young - I've never been little! ) Couldn't tell you what breed they were - or were supposed to be as mongrels Shortly after, when I was 6, mum saw a little Beagle x (Beagle x black wiry thing that lived across the road) advertised in the shop window - we picked her up and named her Sindy or Sid for short! Sindy was the best dog in the world & she lived happily with us for 14 years. She didn't really like kids much tho & I often had bite marks on my nose - my fault, I did tease her! Next came Sukie, another mongrel but looked very much like a Pharoah Hound. The family were moving abroad and mum soon snapped her off them . Sindy must have been about 5 when Sukie came along as a pup. Sukie lived till she was around 12 or 13 I think, she was a gorgeous colour! By this time I'd left home & got married... we had 5 cats, 1 left home to live with the family down the street and nothing could bring her back , her sister & 1 other have since died so we're left with just the 2 now. sadly they are getting on a bit Pixie was our first dog, she came to us in Sept '03 & Palace joined us in March '04 - both get on ok with the cats Mum & Dad had a Yorkshire Terrier called Judy after Sukie died. She lived with them from the age of 2. Last summer however, aged 10, she was sadly attacked by a Staffie and when they operated on her to see what the damage inside was, they found a huge tumour. She showed no signs of illness at all but she wouldn't have lived much longer with that inside her (apparently these things go undedected and when they burst the dog bleeds to death) however that's not really any consolation! I still cry about it - my Mum & Dad were heartbroken which was partly to do with the shock as her death was totally unexpected, with the other dogs they'd known and had time to say goodbye. Mum & Dad now have Sky the Whippet, she's about 18 months old and like a coiled spring! I'm sorry, I got carried away there. I dont think you really wanted my life history did you...?
