Remembering .................... those brave men and women, who on this day, 6th June 1944, were involved in "Operation Overlord" (D-Day); the start of the liberation of Europe, and a returning of freedom and democracy to it's peoples. This date is probably one of the most historic in our country's history, and our two local county Regiments (The Royal Norfolk Regt & The Suffolk Regt) were some of the first troops to land on the beaches of Normandy. During the past fifteen years, Kitty & I have had the privilege of meeting several veterans who were there at D-Day, and the thing which always strikes us so much - is how utterly humble, genuine, and pleasant those men are. The few of them that still survive - are still regularly meeting and keeping in touch with one another after 62 years. Personally, I find this really amazing, and truly illustrates what an impact the war had on them, and how it bound them in a comradeship and friendship that is seldomly seen in today's society. I think it's really important that we remember the selfless courage and hardship they endured during those dark times, and the contribution they made in bringing about the freedom we take for granted today. PS. Kitty and I are helping to organise a 1940's Day at Hoveton village hall, on Saturday 15th July. The event is being opened by Captain John Lincoln (MC), and the veterans of the Royal Norfolk Regiment D-Day Veterans Association. Kitty & I will have a collection of Royal Air Force and Women's Land Army memorabilia on display. There will also be genuine WW2 military vehicles outside the front of the hall, living history displays, projects on display from local children, as well as fairground carousels and stalls at the back of the hall. Please feel free to come along, and meet the veterans who are the day's very special guests.
