The callous murder of an elderly pensioner, with the murderer receiving two years (YES - JUST 2 YEARS!!!) is yet another example of how completely out-of-touch with reality our justice system is (see link below): www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/03/07/nfight07.xmlThe sheer callousness behind this attack is enough to make anyone shudder, but what is worse are the idiots who promote and endorse behaviour like this - The judges and our Government. I'm sorry, but I mistakenly believed that they were on the side of justice, and in safeguarding the public! When, oh when, will we get rid of these stupid, crusty old judges, who are so completely and utterly useless? I wonder how that judge would have felt, if the person murdered had been his wife, or his brother? I wonder if he would have thought a two year sentence for murdering his loved one was fair? I think we all know the answer to that question! I believe it's time to see juries taking an active role in the sentencing process as well. The judge could inform them of the range of sentences that apply to the crime, and then the jury (who know the full in-depth facts of the crime), could come up with a democratic, and fair sentence, judged on the intricacies of the individual case. This will ensure moronic judges would not be free to hand out such daft sentences. The Government should also look towards increasing minimum sentencing for serious acts of violence and murder, to remove these people from the streets, in the interests of public safety.

That's aweful. We have crime lawyers here in the USA who try to get our murders off of doing time.

That's aweful. We have crime lawyers here in the USA who try to get our murders off of doing time. In the UK those type of lawyers are incredibly successful in that role, believe me! And now, even if someone is found guilty, they have a wonderful back-up - in the shape of our Home Secretary, John Reid. He has recently written to ALL judges in the UK asking them to consider lengths of sentencing, and encouraging them NOT to send criminals to prison in the first place! So much for the theory of the Judiciary being free from political inteference! This is all down to the fact that the UK population has grown massively in the past ten years, and adequate prison space has not been provided.

I expect it's another ploy by the government to cut the number of elderly people who are a 'burden' on the 'state'!! Sorry to sound cynical. It's not a laughing matter.
No doubt you know the modern version of the 'Good Samatitan'? (A short version.)
An elderly man was mugged, robbed, beaten, stabbed and left for dead. A bishop came along, glanced at the man and went by on the other side of the road. A judge came along, glanced at the man and went by on the other side of the road. A social worker came along and bent over the old man. "Oh, you poor man," she said. "Whoever did this to you is desperately in need of help"!!!
