Please don't think I'm getting "party political" in any way - cos I'm not.
I do however have something to say on a subject that I believe in very passionately - Democracy - the process by which those that govern us are held accountable by those that are governed (ie-us).
In 2005 the French and Dutch people voted against the proposed EU Constitution. This Constitution would have given wide-ranging powers to unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats in Brussels.
However, German Chancellor Angela Merkell's new "Berlin Declaration" has just been signed by our beloved Prime Minister , Tony Blair. This declaration revives the Constitution plan, which has already been democratically rejected by the French and the Dutch. There are now plans for an EU Army and an EU Foreign Ministry.
This also flies in the face of the assurance that we were given two years ago, by Messrs Blair and Brown, that the British people would be given a referendum on this issue. But now, in the words of Mrs Beckett, the Government would "rise above calls" for such a referendum.
So it appears that our politicians have lied to us again. They have put personal careers and personal gain before the interests of both the peoples of Britain and our friends on Continental Europe.
Although that in itself is nothing new - there is now, a clear indication that they have also very clearly turned their backs on the very principles of democracy, and to me this is utterly shameful. It is shameful, because - it was people like my father, Kitty's father, our Grandfathers, and two Great Uncles (died in WW1) who sacrificed so much - to preserve the very freedoms which we are now seeing taken away from us, right before our very eyes!
Perhaps that is why the majority of the British electorate (including myself) have turned their backs on all the mainstream political parties?
I personally find them all despicable
