I've just gone through the process of turning the radio off several times this morning. Why? There's all this talk about Victoria and David Beckham.
OK, let's get one thing on record to start with.
Yes, they've done well for themselves.
Good luck to anyone in that situation.
But when I think back, wasn't it only a couple of years ago that they were complaining about media intrusion?
Now they are earning mind-boggling amounts of money from promoting their perfect lifestyle.
Subliminal message to us - "All you need is success and money. Check these guys out, and appreciate how lovely and perfect they are!".
Reality Check - "Too bad guys, dream on, you'll never reach this pinnacle of perfection!".
To me the Beckham's are 100% image, 100% spin, and 0% substance.
It seems they are a positive inspiration to others.
Am I the only odd one out, by saying thay do not inspire me one little bit?
The celebrity driven, image-driven, shallow culture of the USA surely is one of the main reasons why that country naturally distances itself from the rest of the world?
The reality is though - There are many other people in America, who are perhaps not so pretty, not always in the media, but nonetheless, are doing things which I think are truly inspiring.
I offer you an insight into one of those.
Now you won't be surprised who that might be. Yes.............it's Dar Williams - A lady with 0% image, 0% spin, but 100% substance!
On her track "Echoes" from her new album "My Better Self," Dar Williams gives voice to the notion that everything we do in our lives, especially the good things and even the small things, resonates all over the world.
In the Fall of 2005 Dar came up with the concept of the Echoes Initiative. In the space of 14 months Dar performed 28 free benefit concerts.
The concerts were done to highlight local organizations doing exceptional work. Small, community-oriented groups like these often struggle for media exposure and financial support even though they perform invaluable work. They are regularly overshadowed by the big headline charities that seem to get all the media attention.

Whether you agree with Dar or not - I also have a tremendous respect for the fact that she often speaks out (very intelligently) about the shallowness of American culture, and understands the problems that America faces. She's spoken out against George Bush, and the war in Iraq from the outset, and this hasn't go down well with all Americans!
I find people like Dar a 100% more inspirational than the Beckham's - but I doubt if you'll ever them in Hello magazine!

Take one step closer
Solving the riddle
It echoes all over the world
Every time you open to kindness
Make one connection used to divide us
It echoes all over the world."
