The other night ITV screened one of the most interesting and well-made programmes in ages.
It was called "Blood on Our Hands", and was a documentary on the English Civil Wars of the 1640's.
What I particularly liked about the programme - was that it was very well researched, very intelligently and cleverly presented, and I loved the way they used very realistic actors/actresses to bring the era to life. They filmed it in black & white, sepia tones and subdued colour which gave it a very unique finish, enabling the viewer to really get a "feel" for the time.
My personal interest in the English Civil Wars has developed slowly over the past few years, and I would say it is one of the most important parts of British history. Although the subject is not covered in school curriculums; I believe it should be - it's every bit as interesting as the Industrial Revolution, WW1 & WW2.
This programme provides the best introduction to the subject that I've ever seen.
Even though it happened over 400 years ago, the lessons of the English Civil Wars are still as relevant today as they have always been; it's just that some people are "switched-off" by the fact that it took place so many years ago. But the more you study it - the more you can see important (and concerning) underlaying parallels with our society today.
If they repeat "Blood on Our Hands", do make the effort to watch it - it should get an award, as it's top-quality, educational TV!
Below: An original Parliamentarian iron "lobster tail" cavalry helmet - one of the prides in my personal collection.
