Hi all, Just joined the club as I am looking for a new dog, been looking for a couple of months and quickly dismissed a greyhound because of their size. However, our last dog was a whippetXlurcher and a wonderful companion. If my new dog was a patch on him we will be happy. I understand greys are of a good nature and easy to live with, is there any variation in size or are they all about the same? If we are to consider rehoming one are there any major considerations, my garden and car a quite small but we live near a big park and the beach. We would need to leave the dog alone for about 4-5 hours a couple of times a week when we are both at work, although I work shifts and am about a lot of the time. Any advice warmly recieved. Regards. Ian

Hi Ian: Welcome to the boards.
Greyhounds do vary in size, but you don't often find them smaller than 25 inches.
If a greyhound might be a bit big - have you considered contacting a local rehoming centre and asking if they have a lurcher to adopt? That might be your best bet under the circumstances.

Hi Ian and to our message board! I always thought the same about Greyhounds that they were too big, but they maybe big but they are normally very easy to live with! They are quite lazy dogs, despite being over used in the racing industry! My Gery (Sophie) is one of the Taller gerys in the group and I live in a two bedroomed terraced house that is not very big, she is happy in the oot of my Toyota Corolla and is happy with a game of footy in my all concrete back yard!! I wouldn't be so quite to dismiss a Gery due to size alone.... they do curl up quite nicely!!!!

Don't accept your dog's admiration as conclusive evidence that you are wonderful.

Hi Ian,
Go along to your animal rescue & tell them what your circumstances are, working hours, situation Etc. they should know their animals well enough to shortlist some most suitable.
(I'm sure people would be happy to post their recommended rescues)
No point getting a Lurcher just because of size if its going to trash your home when you go out!!
Lurchers do tend to be more 'energized' while Greyhounds are more towards the couch potato .... though there are always exceptions to the trend, so speak to someone in the rescue centre who knows the candidate.
Another good idea is to have a chat with Greyhound owners & meet some hounds, maybe a visit to their home to see how they 'fit in' with domestication.
My house is quite small but big enough to have several Greyhounds, we are fortunate to have a good sized garden though!
Good luck ...
